I started training Hung Kuen
in Honolulu during the mid 1960's with Sifu Buck Sam Kong. I trained with
Sifu Kong for a total of 18 years. In this period, I met Grandmaster Lam
Chun Fai for the first time. It was in this time that I forged the foundation
of my skills. I would build upon this over the years to come and had the
opportunity to work as an assistant instructor in Sifu Kong's school.
In 1979, as Sifu Kong moved to Los Angeles, I also moved to LA to maintain
my training regiment.
Over the course of the next
twenty years, I continuously practiced the skills in pursuit of physical,
mental, and spiritual balance within the framework of the Hung Kuen system.
I questioned where I stood in the realm estimation of the Masters. It
was this question that led me to the next level of training, and to seek
Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai in Hong Kong.
With the help of Sifu George
Kyke, my classmate and a long time practitioner of the Lam family system,
I reconnected with Grandmaster Lam Chun Fai in August of 1999. Twenty-eight
years after our initial introduction in Honolulu , I traveled to the Lam
family home in Hong Kong. After a critical analysis of my personal integrity
and skill, Grandmaster Sifu Lam Chun Fai took me on as a student. His
teaching material and ideas about the origin led me to realize the true
essence of Hung Kuen. These teachings took deep root within me and resulted
in an awakening of my mind.
The trip also afforded me the opportunity to meet Great Grandmaster Lam
Jo, 90 years old at the time, and in sparkling, radiant health. The visits
to his home allowed me an opportunity to meet Lam Jo's sons, daughters,
and close disciples. The visitations and teachings continued , with continuous
experience of working with a group that learned from the ultimate source
of the lineage, and exhibited such an extensive understanding and high
skill level of Hung Kuen.
As I practice, I travel toward
a new dimension of progressive thoughts. Perhaps the lifelong journey
to acquire wisdom is the final point. Even after a long time of studying
Hung Kuen, the deep pursuit of that goal is the journey. The final point
will in the end, be decided by itself. |
